{"id":45,"date":"2007-07-08T19:05:53","date_gmt":"2007-07-08T19:05:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/consumermaven.wordpress.com\/2007\/07\/08\/cell-phone-contract-for-casual-or-emergency-use\/"},"modified":"2020-01-04T19:02:23","modified_gmt":"2020-01-05T00:02:23","slug":"cell-phone-contract-for-casual-or-emergency-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/david.bookstaber.com\/Interests\/2007\/07\/cell-phone-contract-for-casual-or-emergency-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Cell Phone Contract for Casual or Emergency Use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you don&#8217;t use a lot of cell phone minutes then you probably shouldn&#8217;t enter into a service contract.\u00a0 Too many people commit to spending $30 or more per month (plus inscrutable taxes) just so they can make an occasional, &#8220;I&#8217;m running late,&#8221; or, &#8220;I&#8217;m over here&#8221; call.<\/p>\n<p>The best alternative is a\u00a0prepaid cell service like <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.t-mobile.com\/shop\/phones\/prepaid.aspx?WT.mc_n=PayasUgo_index&amp;WT.mc_t=OnsiteAd\" title=\"T-Mobile To Go\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T-Mobile To Go<\/a>.\u00a0 There you buy a SIM card that you can plug into any (unlocked) GSM phone and you buy minutes in advance that are credited to that card.\u00a0 For $100 T-Mobile will give you 1000 minutes that will last up to a year.\u00a0 If at the end of the year you haven&#8217;t used them all you can spend as little as $10 to buy more minutes and your entire balance will carry over for another year.<\/p>\n<p>Not only can\u00a0you buy this service without the hassles of a credit check, but you also enjoy\u00a0freedom from any future bills or charges.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t want or need the service you can just throw away your card, or\u00a0sell it with its\u00a0balance to somebody else.\u00a0 Be aware that the cheapest 2-year cell contract will probably cost a total of $700 (hard to tell with all the taxes and surcharges they keep adding &#8212; not to mention the billing errors that always seem to be in the phone company&#8217;s favor).\u00a0 In contrast you can keep T-Mobile To Go for 2 years for just $110 plus sales tax.\u00a0 And in my three years with this service I haven&#8217;t had any unpleasant surprises.<\/p>\n<p>The best way I found\u00a0to buy T-Mobile To Go is at Costco, where last week I got an activated SIM card <em>and<\/em> a\u00a0current-generation slim Samsung t219 phone for just $20 after rebate!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you don&#8217;t use a lot of cell phone minutes then you probably shouldn&#8217;t enter into a service contract.\u00a0 Too many people commit to spending $30 or more per month (plus inscrutable taxes) just so they can make an occasional, &#8220;I&#8217;m running late,&#8221; or, &#8220;I&#8217;m over here&#8221; call.
